Running with Purpose: Sango United Methodist and Habitat for Humanity

Some communities come together through shared traditions. Others bond through service. Sango United Methodist Church has managed to do both for more than two decades.

Each fall, runners, walkers, and families gather for the Sango Scamper—a 10K, 5K, and 1-mile race that winds through the scenic Sango neighborhood. It’s more than just a run; it’s a reflection of the church’s heart for giving back. The event, launched years ago as a way to bring the community together, has grown into a tradition that’s raised over $62,500 for Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County.

“Church support through this event isn’t just critical for funding — it’s a huge encouragement, that we’re so grateful for,” said Executive Director Rob Selkow. “Beyond the proceeds from the Scamper Run, individual church members donate on their own and shop the Habitat ReStore. We’re blessed to partner with a church that lives out Christ’s call to serve others.”.

The Scamper itself is a testament to the spirit of the church. There’s the veteran runner who hasn’t missed a race in years, the kids sprinting toward the finish line, and the volunteers who show up rain or shine to pass out water and cheer on participants. And behind it all, there’s that same mission: to love our neighbors.

The impact of church partnerships goes beyond numbers. Walk through a Habitat home with a new homeowner, and you’ll see the joy of a fresh start, the relief of being in a stable place, and the pride of ownership made possible by volunteers, working together. As The Sango Scamper shows, when a community runs with purpose, everyone wins.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above.” — James 1:17
