8 things to donate when renovating

Home improvement projects can generate a lot of waste, including door knobs, leftover lumber and fixtures. Instead of sending these items to the landfill, consider donating them. Donating renovation materials not only keeps useful items out of the trash but also supports other renovators in our community, and supports the mission of Habitat for Humanity. Habitat ReStore, located at 404 Madison St. in Clarksville offers free donation pickup services for your convenience.

Here are eight types of construction waste that can be donated:

1.Sinks, Toilets, and Bathtubs: These bulky items are best donated if they are in good condition, without stains or chips. Vintage bathroom fixtures are especially popular at architectural salvage stores.

2.Cabinets: If you’re remodeling a kitchen, someone else may need the cabinets you’re removing. Ensure they are in working order with all parts intact before donating.

3.Working Appliances: Appliances like stoves, refrigerators, and washing machines can be donated if they are clean and functional. ReStores does not accept dishwashers.

4.Doors and Windows: Both interior and exterior doors can be donated if they are clean and undamaged. Make sure sliding glass doors and windows are free from cracks to avoid potential safety hazards.

5.Lumber: Salvage shops usually accept larger pieces of wood, like two-by-fours and plywood, as long as they are free of exposed nails or screws.

6.Tiles and Wood Flooring: Recyclable wood flooring should be clean and free of nails, while extra boxes of tiles can also be donated.

7.Lighting: Working light fixtures are in high demand and are good sellers at ReStore.

8.Door Handles and Cabinet Knobs: These fixtures are frequently replaced during renovations and can be useful to others, especially when all parts are kept together.
