(7/21) Editorial: We can help others help Habitat

Habitat for Humanity has reached an important milestone in Montgomery County. The 75th house is being built locally under the program. Despite the fact Habitat has been a part of this community for two decades, there still are some aspects regarding the program that people don’t understand.

The first thing one should know about Habitat for Humanity is that it provides a hand up to families who are low income and currently living in substandard conditions, but it is not a hand out.

If you’d like to help, donating to or buying from the ReStore is a great way to start. Habitat encourages civic groups to get involved in what is called a “Habitat Build.” And individuals also can volunteer to help with an actual build. For more general information, go to Habitat’s website at www.habitat.org.

It is a great way to help people to help themselves and to lift up the entire community at the same time.

(7/17) 75th Habitat House to Be Built Locally

Husband and wife Dyamond and El’Nathon Williams will soon be the proud owners of the 75th house built by Habitat for Humanity in Montgomery County, a four-bedroom home they helped plan. Here they are at the non-profit’s ice cream social with two of their five children

The choir from Deliverance Outreach Temple belted out songs that hit the rafters of Greater St. James Baptist Church as a crowd celebrated the 75th house to be built by Habitat for Humanity.

A rousing rendition of Deitrick Haddon’s “He’s Able” was one of the many high points on Sunday afternoon, when the Habitat for Humanity board members joined supporters, current homeowners and future homeowners for a program and an ice cream social.

(7/11) Habitat Build 2011 Kick Off Event

Since 1992, Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, TN has partnered with and built homes for 74 qualified low-income families. We have stabilized families, revitalized neighborhoods, and strengthened community bonds through homeownership. Habitat families can boast having children as Austin Peay and Vanderbilt graduates, engaging their entrepreneurial spirits as small business owners, and parents who have returned to college.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Habitat for Humanity invites you to our Habitat Build 2011 and groundbreaking of its 75th home. We will celebrate with a community ice cream social on Sunday July 17, 2011 at Greater St. James Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. A fun trivia note, July 17th is also the day that Ronald Regan proclaimed as “National Ice Cream Day” in 1984. What a great way to celebrate a national pastime and one that celebrates Habitat mission and ministry of homeownership!

Your support of Habitat has enabled us to envision ‘simple, decent and affordable’ housing for Montgomery County residents. Your attendance will set the spirit for the 2011 build season.

We hope this celebration will set a new tradition for our Affiliate particularly as we enter our 20th year of Habitat advocacy in 2012.
